• When do you meet?

Friday nights at 7:00 p.m, at the chess club, but not every Friday. To keep track of when we’ll be playing, e-mail Mark Spain with the request to add your name to our message group. We notify the entire group once a date is set. We expect games to take place once or twice a month. In setting dates, we yield, naturally, to any other DiscoveryBound event taking place, and to any local Christian Science lecture, etc.

• Is this free?

Yes, though if you wish to join the Chess and Games club, there is a charge of $15.00 per month per child (age 19 and under). See the chess club’s Web site for other membership offerings. The club also holds chess tournaments in which participants are members of the United States Chess Federation.

• How is transportation handled?

We’re flexible. If you’d like to drop off your chess player, that’s fine. If you need a ride, let us know.

Anyone doing the driving for participants outside their own family agrees to abide by the guidelines published in the DiscoveryBound Resource Binder.

• Do you meet for dinner?

We haven’t yet. What did you have in mind?

FYI, if you miss dinner entirely, you’ll still live. Amidst all the chess sets and books for sale, there are also snacks and cold drinks. In addition, pizza arrives around 7:30 and can be bought by the slice.

• Is it necessary to play a game? Can I just watch and learn?

No and Yes.

• I don’t know a bishop from a band saw. Is there any hope for me?

If you’ll be coming with your child, and aren’t really into chess yourself, note that adults are permitted to sneak out, as long as they promise not to get into trouble. Good news: there’s a Barnie’s coffeeshop two doors down.

• Does playing chess tend to interfere with school work?

The good news is that we meet on Friday nights. Even if a student has a homework project, he/she has the whole weekend to beat it into submission.

• Is there any kind of age limit?

The chess club has organized tournaments for adults on Tuesday nights, but Friday nights are geared to the K-12 set.
