Synopsis:

Mr. Jameson informs his reporters that the TOVAL award selection committee is in New York to decide upon a winner. Jameson suspects that they might finally select Dr. Moon, an american geneticist, to be the winner this year. He assigns Peter and another Bugle reporter to attend a press conference about cloning being held by the scientist. During the demonstration, Dr. Moon clones a frog before the eyes of several amazed reporters.

Meanwhile, a mysterious figure plants a bomb in the elevator at the hotel where several members of the TOVAL committee are staying. When the committee members board the elevator, the bomb is ignited, sending them crashing down several floors. Leaving the press conference, Peter hears about the accident on the radio and proceeds to the crime scene where Spider-Man surveys the area. Later, Peter encounters Dr. Moon in the hotel which causes his Spider sense to go off. He begins to link Dr. Moon with the explosion and piece together that Dr. Moon may have succeeded in cloning human beings. Dr. Moon's animosity for the TOVAL committee is well known, given that the committee had passed him over for many years. Peter begins to fear that the other members of the TOVAL committee are in grave danger, as is Lisa Benson, the daughter of one of the committee members.

Peter overhears a phone call between Dr. Moon and Ms. Benson and decides to follow her as Spider-Man. He manages to track her to a section of town filled with abandoned buildings. Spider-Man arrives just as Dr. Moon pulls a gun on Lisa and saves her life. During the fight, however, Spider-Man cuts his hand, leaving droplets of blood around the complex. Dr. Moon uses these samples to make a clone of Peter Parker. We learn in fact, that the Dr. Moon we are seeing is an evil clone of the real Dr. Moon and that the new Peter Parker is also evil. The evil clones recognize that Peter Parker is a huge threat and plot to do him in at the TOVAL MASQUERADE BALL. It's Spider-Man vs. Spider-Man in a spectacular rooftop battle which may spell the end for the good Peter Parker.

Comments:

This is the only Spider-Man episode featuring any well known actors. Bochner does a solid job as Dr. Moon but Morgan Fairchild's performance is among the worst I've ever seen. Still, this is an exciting episode with a neat plot, solid scripting and superb stunt work. For purists of the comic book, this episode features Aunt May and a scene where Spidey shows off his tremendous Spider-Strength by breaking out of a bank vault.
