DAVIS "VANTAGE PRO2 PLUS" RECORDS

The Ferndale weather station was located at 46.18°S, 168.93°E,altitude approx. 186m. Station closed 24 Dec 2007.

Daily records are for the period midnight to midnight.

All measurements are metric & times refer to the 24hr clock.

Rainfall readings at Ferndale were not reliable due to post height and exposed site - refer to the 127mm steel and Nylex 1000 rain gauge records on "Weather - Daily Notes" for comparison.

Left:The Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station on 8 May 2007. Site selected for wireless transmission to art studio in background and for good exposure to wind. Temperature readings are similar to the Stevenson screen measurements but often slightly higher than Gore Metservice readings. Rainfall measurements are significantly less than 3 other ground based rain gauges on the property, including one 2m away from this station (in blue bucket). I blame this on wind exposure and the gauge's height on the post. Solar readings are higher than expected - will need to be checked.

Manual Weather Instruments
Left: the best thermometers (acquired from Dobbie Instruments in Sydney in the early 1980's) finally got a Stevenson screen and were shifted from the cabin garden to the nearby nursery on 19 Dec 2006 ... prior to that (below right) only overnight minimum readings were included in my records. Location altitude approx 210m.

Above right: a less accurate max/min thermometer attached to the oldest tree on the property (a shade tree is the next best thing to a Stevenson screen) - supplied the maximum temps recorded on the "Daily Notes" page until 19 Dec 2006. It also supplies the minimum readings "at lowest contour" (altitude approx 175m). The readings seemed generally believable when compared to the lower elevation official Metservice station near Gore. However, by March 2007 it has become clear that the max readings are consistently 1 to 2°C below both the Davis and Stevenson screen measurements.

In the nursery a professional 127mm steel rain gauge supplies the rainfall records for the "Daily Notes" page. To its left is an old Nylex 1000 gauge.
