System Software/Mac OS on LCsThis page attempts to detail the operating system configurations of the machines that fall into the LC category. I have listed all the machines' original, maximum and optimal operating systems. I have not tested most machines in the list with the optimal systems recommended but have based the recommendations on the CPU used inthe systems and the amount of RAM it is capable of taking. I tried to balance speed and usability with being as up-to-date as possible. In the case of the LC and LCII it is hard to recommend System 7.0 or higher as they are too slow to run economically on these machines, even though many LCIIs were distributed with OS 7.0.1. This is due in part to the fact that the LC and LCIIs were, in many people's opinion, deliberately crippled by Apple to fulfil the LC 'Low Cost' element. See LC Designs and Caveats for further rants and praise of these machines.
*Your Mileage May Vary! This really depends on what you want to do with it.
Gamba's site has links to places where you can dowload many older versions of Macintosh System or Mac OS software. Version 7.6 and later are still officially sold by Apple but can be found for a reasonable price on eBay or the LowEndMac Swap List. Apple Stores sell the System 7.6 CD for $99. System EnablersTo run sytem 7.0 and 7.1 on the later Macintosh LCs a special file must be added to any System Folder or boot disk that allows the OS to work with machines made after it's release. These files are called System Enablers and are avaialble from Apple's FTP site.
According to Apple TIL document 11491, Mac OS 7.5 requires no System Enablers as the LCIII and LC475 were released before Mac OS 7.5. |
