Case Study

OREGON MUSEUM OF
SCIENCE & INDUSTRY
Direct Mailer | Spring 2004

BACKGROUND: The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry hosted the “Titanic Science” exhibit in the Summer of 2004. The exhibit sought to answer questions about the Titanic disaster using modern science and technology.

PRIMARY CHALLENGE: Due to a tight timeline, the museum was unable to get images of artifacts and displays that would be in the exhibit. Therefore, I had no actual supporting artwork or images that could readily serve to convey the flavor and feel of the exhibit.

STRATEGY/SOLUTION: I decided to create a semi-realistic illustration depicting the bathysphere Nautilus exploring the Titanic wreck. This illustration would wrap both sides of the #10 carrier envelope. After researching the Titanic wreck and the efforts made to investigate it, I understood the ship’s structure and how it lay on the ocean floor. I was then able to create a hypothetical scene of the bathysphere Nautilus shining its lights on the wreckage. I used Illustrator to create shapes and Photoshop to give the scene texture and depth and to create lighting. The scene is meant to evoke a sense of mystery about the wreckage and the secrets it hides.

RESULT: The museum loved the mail piece and received good attendance throughout the duration of the exhibit.
