Winner of the BBC World Music Award 'Best in Europe 2008,’ this group of innovative flamenco musicians is made up of young heirs and followers of the Diego del Gastor school.  By fusing the Cuban tres (guitar with three pairs of strings) and the flamenco guitar they achieve a creative reinterpretation of Gastor's musical legacy.

G. D. Harris: The Ostrich Dance
The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company of Ohio, which specializes in African-American repertory, has reconstructed from film a dance that Asadata Dafora choreographed in 1932, three years after arriving in the United States from his native Sierra Leone.  The male dancer embodies the giant bird: he does the staccato turns of the head and the rippling wing movements in an extraordinary choreography.

This pyrotechnics musical spectacle was the closing ceremony of the 'Festes de la Mercé 2008', Barcelona's annual festival. It features the 'Explosion Band' where dozens of performers beat metal containers and drums in a big outdoors performance. Fireworks light up the sky against the background of the city's historic center.

The Dizu Plaatjies Ibuyambo Ensemble:

Dizu Plaatjies is the founder and former leader of South Africa’s internationally celebrated marimba group, AMAMPONDO. He led this group from a band of drummers on the streets of Cape Town to concert stages around the world. The composition featured here was written by soprano marimba player, Nicolas Gongxeka.

SCOTLAND (BBC Scotland)
queen victoria school:  Medley
Scotland’s colourful musical spectacular, staged at the famous Edinburgh Castle every year, was first introduced in 1950.  This excerpt features the band from the Queen Victoria School, a prestigious boarding school founded in 1908 as a memorial to Scottish soldiers killed in the South Africa War. The age of the performers ranges from 13 to 18 years old.

This polyphonic female choir features the amazing voices of Senem Aypar, Çağlan Tankuryürümez, Elif Gökalp, Amber Türkmen. The piece featured here, recorded in the TRT studios, is a powerful sample of the rich traditions of Turkish Folk Music.

Habib Koité:  N' Teri
This West African country has produced many great musicians. Koité comes from the Khassonké griot tradition. From his early days, he has played traditional Malian tunes to make his instrument mimic the traditional n'goni (a four-string lute) and kamele n'goni, or young man's harp, with six strings, giving a richness and native texture to his work.

The Idan Raichel Project:  Im Telech
Fascinated by Israel's diversity, Idan Raichel sought to celebrate his appreciation and respect for different traditions in a special project. He invited over 70 people from the country's diverse music scene to participate in his recordings. This artistic experiment turned into Israel’s biggest musical phenomenon in recent memory. Im Telech is one of his compositions.
