The aim of the game

The idea is really simple: there's a row of 9 cells, numbered from 1 through 9. You roll two dice, and add their values. You have to close one or more cells (among those 9) so that their sum equals the sum of the dice. Repeat as long as there are open cells, or the open ones don't add up to the dice values. Then start again until your score overcomes a certain limit.

The game in practice

The following figure shows the main window when a game is in progress: you can see the 9 cells and below them the bar with the score of the current game; the limit is 45, that's the sum of all integer numbers from 1 through 9. Cells 4 and 6 are closed (their colour is light grey), while cells 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 are open (their colour is white). Cell 1 is open but selected (its colour is dark grey). Two dice have been rolled, with values equal to 1 and 3, summing to 4. Since cell number 4 is already closed, the player must find another combination of open cells that sum up to 4. The only available one is 1 + 3. So the player clicks with the mouse on cell 1 or types number 1 on the keyboard. The cell becomes selected (its colour is dark grey). In the bottom right corner of the window, the sum of the current selection (1) is reported.

The player then clicks on cell number 3 or types 3 on the keyboard, and this cell becomes selected too. The sum of the selection is now 4, that's coincident with the sum of the dice. The button in the bottom right corner of the window becomes highlighted.

Click on it (or press Enter) to confirm the selection: cells 1 and 3 become closed (light gray), and a new round is ready to begin (just click on the Roll button on the bottom left corner of the window or type Enter):

Go on until all cells have been closed (this is called a strike), or the remaining cells don't sum up, in any way, to the sum of the dice. In this case, the button in the bottom right corner never highlights, you have to click on it (it simply says Give up) to stop the current round; all cells that are still open are summed up, and the total is added to the score. All cells are then reopened, and a new round begins, until the score is greater than 45. When the game is over, a summary of the total score is given, together with the number of rounds played and the number of points per round: the lower this value, the better your performance. The best performance ever is kept for future memories as an high score, visible through the Show Hi Scores command in the Game menu; the hi scores window lets you clear hi scores if you feel you'd better to.
Always through the Game menu you can abort the current game or enable/disable sound effects. Through the application menu, instead, you can look at the about box, and activate or deactivate the automatic search for updates. Should you prefer that Tirar l'Alba does not automatically search for updated versions, you can manually start a search through the Check Now for Updates… command.
