Lauren's 10 Year High School Reunion

It's amazing what a decade will do to a person!

I know I'm a lot different than I was when I graduated from high school. There's the obvious stuff -- the whole married thing, living in Texas, a solid 15 pounds heavier, better hair... but along with all that comes the gift of perspective. To keep things from getting too deep, I'll leave that comment there and instead mention that it also turns out we've AGED! Here I am, feeling like I could still pass for a high school kid but throwing all of us 28-ish year-olds in a room all at once made me realize -- we look older! Almost 30!

While I'd like to say I spent the whole evening reconnecting with everyone from high school, I spent most of the night with the people I've kept in touch with over the years... most importantly, Saturday night was my only time with Rachel over the entire Thanksgiving break! Here we are having fun with Marc and with Mike Seidman, who it was great to catch up with -- hard to believe that the reunion night was the first time Mike met Marc and I met Mike's wife Rhonda.

Of course, Wednesday only left me wanting more of Erin and Bridget, so I spent the other half of the night with them:

That said, I did manage to have conversations with people I haven't thought of in a very long time! I was shocked when Dennis Abramson accused me of selling the shore house (it turns out my parents just had the "Arbittier" lettering by our door painted over), and somehow I ended up in a circle of the other Abington Penn grads -- Cindy Mullock, Allison Rosen, Elliot Diamond, etc. There were whole groups of women that looked more beautiful than they did in high school, and in general the men looked a little shorter, heavier and balder than I remembered -- so I wonder, is that a continuing trend or by the 20 year will all the men look like sexy silver foxes as the women get matronly?

In the end I felt like people were less guarded and more interesting (and interested) than I thought they'd be -- Certainly more so than at the 5 year reunion. I was amazed how many people became teachers around Abington, and how many became lawyers in New York. Plenty of people moved out of the area, but they all seemed to gravitate to a coast -- I was definitely the only Texan aside from Marc. Speaking of Marc, I'm pretty sure he had a better time than half of the legitimate Abington alumni! By the end of the night, he told me all about Julie Hamilton's church architect fiance, Tom Scott's mechanical engineering job... and he had very interesting views on who was obviously a closeted homosexual. Now there's a husband I can take anywhere.

Without too much introspection I will definitely mention that I learned a lot of new information (like the fact that everyone thought my senior prom date, whose identity I will protect, had womanly hips) and also came clean with some of my own (like telling my first junior high school boyfriend the reason I broke up with him -- by passed note -- after 10 days. I was afraid to french kiss!).

All in all, I'm very glad I went... and look forward to future reunions!
