L.A. Day 2

On the day of the wedding, we stop by to visit my cousin, Parker, and see our old friend Elliot, his brother Ed, and Sister Tanya

Heading North
On Saturday we slept in at Rob's house a bit and, after waking up and milling about the mansion, we went down the street to Rob's local Mel's Diner. You really can't go wrong with Mel's we've determined - it's a great place for some greasy breakfast food. With our belly's full, we packed up the rental car and headed for the dreaded 101. Fortunately, it's pretty empty mid-day on a Saturday and we were in Thousand Oaks within a half hour. We stopped by to see my cousin Parker since he was on Spring Break and just lounging around the house reading Catch-22 for school. Both Lauren and I marveled at this since neither of us were able to make it through that book.

As is frequently the case when we travel to LA, my aunt and uncle, Brenda and Ed, were traveling to the east coast but Parker was happy to let us stay at the house on Saturday night so we could spend some time with all of them when they came back into town on Sunday.

You are never Loh-nly in Camarillo
Our stop in Thousand Oaks was pretty brief and we got back in the car and headed to Camarillo to meet up with Elliot Loh (our old Austin roommate and groomsman and all around best friend) who was in Camarillo with his brother and sister, Ed and Tanya to commemorate the day their mother passed away six years ago. It sounds somber, but they were all in good spirits since, as Elliot put it, "the is a good time for us to all get together and make sure we are meeting her expectations." We met them for lunch at the Somis Market for some extremely good Mexican food and an exchange of belated gifts.

Here is Ed and Tanya showing their Loh-face:

Here I am with Elliot:

Fat, Dumb, and Happy-o
This is our second trip to Camarillo and both Lauren and I remembered the most distinguishing feature of the area - the air smells like Lemon Fresh Joy. There are so many citrus trees growing around this area that it's almost intoxicating. In addition to citrus, they grow avocado's in the area. The consequences of this were not immediately apparent until we went over to visit the Loh's neighbor and friend, Lesley Ling. There is where we met Happy-o.

Happy-o is the name of the Loh's neighbors/friends dog and he's huge. I am sad to say that we don't have a picture of Happy-o but suffice it to say that he is the fattest golden retriever I have ever seen. How did he get so fat you ask? Well, he eats all the avocados that fall to the ground on their property. They don't know how to stop him. He's so fat, he has a big fat pad on top of his head - it's truly bizarre.

Anyway, Lesley let us change for the wedding in their house and then we were off to the Spanish Hills Country Club for the wedding.

Andy and Ellie
Now, for those of you who don't know, the reason we came out to LA was for my good friend Andy Hall's wedding. Andy and I lived together, along with one other guy, Jamie, in Raleigh for a little over a year. It's kind of strange for it to happen so quickly, but in that short period of time, Andy and Jamie and I became very good friends and continue to stay in touch ten years later. Well, Andy *finally* found a wonderful woman, Ellie, and this was their day to make it official. We only met Ellie at *our* wedding but we know she's awesome because people kept coming up to us and telling us "Your friend Ellie is soooo cool!! And her boyfriend seemed pretty nice too." So we were very happy to come be with them on their wedding day.

The ceremony was outside and, although it was a little windy, it was very beautiful. They looked fantastic and the Reverend, Diana Trautwein, did something really nice with the ceremony. She had them write love-letters to each other that she read to us as they said their vows. It was very cool and something we hadn't seen before.

Here's Andy sealing the deal with Ellie:

Jamie was one of the groomsmen and it was great to see him and his wife Diana too!

The reception was very nice and the food was exceptional. We weren't sure who we would be sitting with since we didn't know very many of Andy's old friends and relatives, but they sat us with Jamie and Diana of course and a really great group of people. We all hit it off immediately and had a really fun time ragging on republicans and sharing our top5 TiVo lists.

One of the bigger surprises of the evening was when Andy and Ellie came out for their first dance which was a really well choreographed little latin number that really blew us all away! Now, I remember going with Andy, Jamie and our standard group of girl friends to these crappy little clubs on Hillsborough St. in Raleigh where we all pretty much just did the white-man-shuffle. This was something entirely different. I would like to think that they were inspired by Lauren and I doing our little dance number at our wedding, but frankly it seemed like Andy and Ellie had been practicing for far longer.

All said and done, the wedding was fantastic and we were really happy to have been there. All three of us have now been to each other's weddings in the past four years and it's not just great to still have Andy and Jamie as friends but for each of us to have Lauren, Diana, and Ellie is even better.
