Camping at Inks Lake
The Neighbors Ignore Weather Reports and Go
Camping Anyway!
It's really difficult to find a weekend when the
Zimmermans, Jeff & Cori AND the Davises can all take off together and go
camping, so even when the weather reports said unseasonably cold weather and
rain, we knew we had to give it a try. Donning the clothes we usually reserve
for trips North (as the ranger said as we entered the park "I hope ya brought
your long unders!"), we all arrived at Inks Lake (outside of Burnet, Tx) by
before dark on Friday. We were all set
up by sunset, and gathered around the table for the first delicious camping meal
of the trip -- Cori's Spaghetti. Note that our camping trips together are not
exactly the primitive type. Instead of the dehydrated pouch of semi-edible food
you may be picturing, Cori brought a huge salad, pre-cooked spaghetti, her
mother's fantastic meat sauce recipe, garlic bread, wine, etc.
Jeff got out of meal duty, but took on
another very important role -- the Fire
Man: Before
long it was pitch black, so we gathered around the site with our headlamps (even
Mazzy had one!) and relaxed, listened to a little of Marc's guitar, caught up
with each other and warmed up with the help of the fire and our cozy North Face
gear, not to mention some belly-warming after dinner
drinks.
As is always the case with camping, we
were all ready to call it a night by about 10PM, so we headed into our tents for
a good night's sleep. Saturday morning the Davises were in charge of breakfast,
and the whole group enjoyed donuts, hearty biscuits with sausage gravy, and
cinnamon coffee before we headed out on a beautiful hike through the pink
granite hill country by Inks Lake.
The 40 degree weather didn't stop Ella
and some of the other pooches from taking a dip. The humans stayed
dry...
.. until it started to drizzle. Luckily we
had just made it back to the campsite. Ella and I relaxed in the tent while
waiting for the rain to pass, but Marc had a mission... which he
accomplished!
The weather cleared so after some beer
brats & baked beans, we headed out for one more long walk. "Devil's Hole"
was a sight to see (below), though even more fun was "sight seeing" around the
RV campground -- you wouldn't believe the setup some of our fellow campers
had!
On the way back, the grownups got a
little tired, so we let the dogs do the
work:
We got back just as darkness fell, so
Jeff made another fire and we gathered around for fire-cooked burgers &
foil-steamed veggies ("Steamboats"), just finishing up our melted
chocolate-marshmallow bananas when the sky opened up -- this time, for
good.We all headed into our tents and
called it a night, hoping for the best. Unfortunately it was STILL storming and
cold by morning, so we all shivered our way through packing up our things and
were on our way a little earler than
planned.
Given the predictions, the weekend
could have been worse -- the rain definitely did not ruin the relaxing fun of
the trip. We're looking forward to another great camping weekend soon...
depending on when the future little Zimmerman #2 is ready for
it!
