Last Minute Trip to NYC

Work & working in some visits with friends

When my newest client (don't I sound official?) Bside needed my last minute help marketing them at the International Film Festival Summit in New York City, I was ready and willing to head east for a few days. We had only a couple days to figure out our exhibition strategy, teach me the demo, create marketing materials and more, so it wasn't exactly a boondoggle, but it was tons of fun nonetheless. Needless to say, executive directors of independent film festivals are way more fun than the supply chain IT guys I'm usually hanging with at corporate events.

Here's the little exhibit we put together. I spent the majority of the time sitting at the little computer, walking everybody through the Austin Film Festival website to show them our stuff while CEO Chris handled the key contacts, spoke on panels and talked partnerships:

While we spent roughly 7AM till 5PM each day at the conference, I managed to get some time in with friends. I came in early Sunday to hang with Rachel and Rich, our first quality time together in over a year! Their 700-ish sq. ft. apartment is down to about 300 due to a major kitchen renovation. It'll be awesome when it's done, but in the meantime they are spending as much time out of their home as possible. We easily killed time dining on the east side, shopping at little home stores and holiday fairs, and generally catching up. We only went back because of laundry duty. Watching them beg each other to head down to the basement of the apartment to (insert money in the machines to) switch loads made me realize, as I often do, how high quality of life is in Austin. Regardless, they have a great life and routine together and I'm SO excited to see them get married in May!

Not knowing how much time I'd have on my own (we weren't sure if we'd have meetings in the evenings), I didn't make any other social plans unless you count crashing at cousin Monica & Jeff's place on the Upper West Side. It was super generous of Mon & Jeff to let me stay with them, and Bella and Beckett were wonderful hosts. Here you see them welcoming me into their bouncy house (which incidentally was about the size of most of my friends' NYC apartments):

Luckily, I ended up with 2 open dinners and college roomies Tracy and Bonnie were free! It was so great catching up with both of them -- it's been too long, and the phone just isn't the same.

On my final day in the city, I was able to get away for about an hour, and Pat managed to meet me for some good authentic Korean food before she headed to a play and I made my way to the airport. No pictures of this meal, but it was so nice to share the unexpected time together. The good news is that, judging by how well the Bside meetings went, I'm guessing I'll be back in New York in no time, hopefully with more time to play!
