Weekend in the Bay Area

Nonstop Friends, Family & Francisco Fun

It's about time Marc & I got to San Francisco. I guess we were hoping that if we kept avoiding the trip, our friends and family would just move back? But maybe it's a good thing that they are taking a little longer than we'd hoped, because we ended up having a fabulous weekend in the bay area!

We got in on Thursday night, and were welcomed to the city by Amity and Justin, who had spent all evening cooking up a feast for us! The seafood pie was awesome, as was Am & Justin's apartment.

After feasting, it was time to head to the very beautiful Kruse house for the night. We were instantly greeted by Mike and Ella's long-lost buddy, Georgia, who showed us to our huge guest room. Stephanie was already asleep, which only offended us for a short while, until we learned the reason for her extreme sleepiness. Yes that's right, ANOTHER of our friends is expecting!

We spent Friday morning with Mike, checking out the neighborhood (Laurel Heights?) and forcing him to take us on cable cars while the rest of our friends and family worked. By around 1, we made Stephanie ditch work (she's in marketing at Banana Republic) to take us through an awesome modern art collection personally owned by Gap founder Donald Fisher. We saw some unbelievable sculptures and paintings by the world's most renowned modern artists (we're talking everything from Warhol to Calder and even a 180 ton piece by our new welding hero, Richard Serra). One of our favorites was a video piece that showed us catching on fire as we looked at it:

All that modern art made us hungry, so we were off to the Ferry Building for lunch.

Apparently the whole pregnant tired disease is catching, because after lunch it was back to the Kruse house for naps. I was the only coherent one, but was plenty occupied -- you see, Steph gets EVERY magazine in existence for free because she works at Banana Republic, and I made my way through all of them as the rest of the house slept.

We got to meet up with Amity & Justin for dinner. The six of us went to a delicious meal at a small plates place called Isa, and all met up again in the morning for breakfast before heading out to Napa. This was Marc & my first time in Napa, and the mix of experience from Mike, Stephanie, Am & Justin made for the perfect day. We started out at Domain Carneros, a big, traditional vineyard, then moved to the hidden modern gem Artesa before settling at a small, lesser known family winery called Hendry, where we got the full tour and lesson in grape growing and wine making.

After a perfect afternoon of wine tasting, we made our way back to the city for a Singaporan dinner at Strait's Cafe before passing out even earlier than usual. Space met us for dinner, and all of the boys enjoyed one more alcoholic drink -- the especially manly Singapore Sling:

It's a good thing we got a good night's sleep, because Sunday morning we were off for another entirely Franciscan experience hiking through the mountains near Muir Beach, along Coastal Trail. It was utterly beautiful.

Sunday evening, we finally had to part ways with Am & Justin (they had tickets to the Rolling Stones concert), but Elliot and his girlfriend Amy had made it back in town, so the Kruses, Space & us met up with them for a great evening at the Vietnamese restaurant The Slanted Door.

The whole trip was really great -- even though it was just a long weekend, it felt like a real vacation. And what vacation would be complete with out the Marc Davis Nostril Shot?

We hope our friends will make their way back in our direction eventually, but in the meantime we *might* be willing to make the San Francisco experience an annual one...
