Oaxacan Vacation Part 1 -- Huatulco
Marc & Lauren relax in the beautiful Oaxacan
beach of Huatulco
When Marc and I decided to plan our vacation, we
definitely had different priorities. Since work tends to leave him stressed and
exhausted, all he wanted was a beach, some fruity drinks and good food. I was
more in the mood for adventure, or at least experiencing something I'd never
experienced before. We also both agreed we didn't want to waste too much time
traveling, which narrowed things down a bit before we began asking our well
travelled friends for advice, and were surprised to get many votes for Oaxaca, a
central/western state in southern Mexico. Oaxaca is known for its incredible
Native American and Spanish history, its unusual and beautiful local art, and
(the part that clinched the deal for us) its world renowned cuisine. Luckily, it
also had a gorgeous resort beach -- which is where we began our trip (decompress
first, explore afterwards).The Camino
Real Zaachila, in Huatulco, Oaxaca -- such a gorgeous place, we didn't leave it
once in 3 days:
Huatulco activities included laying by
the pool, playing in the ocean, beginning to experience native Oaxacan foods
(like squash blossoms and corn fungus, all rolled up into tidy quesadillas),
sipping drinks on the beach, trying to pet the iquanas, reading (we each plowed
through stacks of books!), and our favorite new activity,
siesta:
By the time we were ready to fly into
Oaxaca City, we were more relaxed than we'd been in years. I think the funniest
moment was when Marc woke me up before the sun rose one morning (he learned to
embrace siesta from the start) to proclaim that there was absolutely no more
sleep in him... he had literally OVERslept. One more day and we might have
even crossed the line into bored! Luckily, we were off to Oaxaca City for a VERY
different 3 day experience....
