L.A. Day 1
With Marc's friend Andy getting married in
Camarillo, we took the opportunity to go a couple days early and visit Rob and
friends.
Clear Eye for the Straight
GuyWe got to Rob's place Thursday night
and immediately remembered how we'd be paying him back for his hospitality.
See, for a supercool top L.A. music producer, Rob's outer hipness is seriously
lagging behind. While the plan for the long term is to do a full style
makeover, the top priority for this short visit was picking him out some new
glasses. He got his last pair 12 years ago, so it's definitely time for an
upgrade. Here we are trying on over $10K worth of
Cartiers...
... but in the end, Marc and I were strongly
pulling for these Ann et Valentin's (spinoffs from one of our past favorite
brands, Face a Face):
Afternoon <White Monkey>
TeaAfter a stressful morning of
glasses-shopping, we met one of our favorites of Rob's friends, Kevin McCourt
(unfortunately and ironically, Kevin's wife Susan couldn't join us since she was
in Austin). We ate lunch at an awesome new-agey place that offered countless
tea options including my favorite, Red Bush, and Marc and Kevin's pick, White
Monkey. Here are Rob (note his out-of-date glasses) and Kevin, contemplating
their tea options:
Universal
StudiosFriday afternoon, we were in for
a treat. Another favorite Rob-friend, Scott Gershin, is a sound supervisor for
SounDelux, and invited us onto the Universal Lot to watch him mix the effects
for the upcoming Vin Diesel movie,
Chronicles of
Riddick.. It was UNBELIEVABLE being on the
set, seeing how much work goes into every single footstep, let alone fight
scene, of a big budget movie like that. Look how many buttons there are to
press (we can't show you what's on the big screen or we'll be sued for zillions
of dollars)!
Eventually Marc and I figured out how to
manipulate the hundreds of tracks through the 9 connected protools systems so
they fired the 25 sound people under Scott and let us finish the
movie:
Almost
FamousAs if the day wasn't full enough
of talented friends, we had dinner and hung out Friday evening with 14 year-old
performing prodigy, Sebastian Mego (and his father Gus and puppy Tango). Rob
has been working with Sebastian for about 2 years now and they are just a couple
months away from presenting Sebastian's first album to some very eager record
labels. He and his dad live in Rob's downstairs apartment and spend their days
(when not home schooling) running from voice lesson to choreographer to
recording session to everything else that turns an incredibly talented kid into
a star. Marc and I heard some unfinished songs and know that soon, a lot more
people will have heard of Sebastian. Here's Sebastian singing and dancing to
his future hit R&B single, Hotty
Hot:
