Day Gone Awry
It's true, bad things happen in
threes
1) I was laid off from work. Such is the world of
venture-backed enterprise software, I guess, but BLAM! It kind of caught me off
guard. They swear they only want to lay me off till the end of January,
though... just a little something to get them (and clearly not ME!) through the
holidays. I told Marc the news and we decided to discuss the whole thing that
evening. The company gave me a few options (part-time work, leave of absence,
contracting), all with about a million intricate details about what they mean
for benefits, stock, paycheck, etc. But first Marc needed to go pick up a part
for his hotrod.
2) On the way to pick
up his hotrod part... CRASH! Marc got rear-ended. By a 19-year-old kid driving
his girlfriend's mother's car. For the awesome details of this story, check out
the rodblog. Needless to say, his car is totalled. We just got the call from
the insurance company, and we will be getting a check, not a truck, back from
Geico. Marc was okay though -- he and the kid weren't hurt, so they just
exchanged insurance information and Marc went on his way.
Until...
3) A few miles down the road
from Marc's accident (just as he'd called me and we were both wondering what bad
thing #3 was going to be)... WEEEOOOOH (that's my siren sound). The fuzz pulled
him over. Before Marc could even ask what the problem is, Smokey had Marc
against his car with cuffs on and was reading him his Miranda rights! After a
while everything got cleared up and the cops realized they'd made a big mistake
(again, see rodblog for full details) and let him
go.
But how's that for three? Job lost,
truck totalled, and husband (almost) arrested. It's enough to make me want to
write a country song.
For those of you
worried about us Davises, don't be. The truth is, I'll finally make use of my
Trilogy severance and take this opportunity as the kick in the pants I need to
start my own boutique marketing firm. Seriously, I've already got 3 contracts
(most of them paying!) and should have my official website up by January. And
you know Marc -- a totalled vehicle is really just a great excuse for him to go
car shopping again. I wouldn't say he's thrilled, but it's way better than if
his truck was badly damaged but fixable. As for the cuffs and the right to
remain silent? Well, it makes for a good story.
