Karl & Tonya Visit
The Davises Support the Katrina Relief
Effort
Karl (one of my best friends from college) and
his wife Tonya made plans to visit us in Austin (from their home town of New
Orleans) weeks before Katrina hit. Since then, while their life was turned
upside down, they would easily consider themselves the lucky ones. The worst
damage to their home in the Garden district was mold (both on the walls and more
drastically, in the fridge), and even Karl's cockroach of an old car wasn't
touched (not even his full gas tank was tapped!). They escaped the weekend
before the hurricane with their essentials and their scrappy little pooch,
Barley. Both of them work in the oil
industry, which means both of their employers had them back to work within a
week. They were relocated to temporary housing in Houston, and have remained
there all month. While they aren't big fans of Houston (they plan to get back
to New Orleans by November 1), this DID make it easier for them to come to
Austin! We were really excited to see them and catch up, and offer them a
couple days of "relief" from living in Houston. The only slight concern was
that after a full house of guests the weekend before, we weren't sure if we were
*quite* ready for another round of host-mode and selfishly had hoped for a more
relaxing weekend.Never fear! Karl
& Tonya were ALSO hoping for a relaxing weekend, and quickly advised us to
ditch our Austin Chamber of Commerce Tourism Volunteer hats in favor of good
conversation. Our biggest plans involved some great meals, relaxing by the
lake, experiencing the two-stepping wonders of The Broken Spoke, and cracking up
as their 6 pound mutt, Barley, completely dominated poor Ella. While a visit
from Karl is always a good thing, Marc & I both agreed that the best part
was really getting to know Tonya. We'd only had short conversations with her in
the past, so while we were proud of Karl for snagging a lovely southern girl, we
finally got to see just how cool, funny & quirky Tonya is -- they truly are
perfect for each other. Here we are at

Ella without spitting at her:
