TIME TO TIME, MIND TO MIND,
the world is changing and being changed. ideology sometime becomes harsh enough to give us suffer and limit, but also it offers us very interesting linkage to the outer world. i will try to be as frank as possible to catch up and dispatch those linkage. the reflections from each of you are always inspiration for my work. |

...so, what's the matter between maq and the world?

HOW FRAGILE human being are! every news after the hurricane makes me very scarced, and that reminds me of one japanese movie. 'dragonhead', remade from the very popular comic books, was taken in uzbekistan in 2002, when i was living there, and i worked for that for some months as an interpreter. the movie describes some fearful scene of dead tokyo destroyed by the eruption of mt. fuji. during the movie-making, i repeated reading the original comics and the scenario of the movie, and, was made to imagine how cruel are another aspects of human being who are driven into fear and despair. but i'd never thought such a merciless scene comes real, besides, in the USA where everyone seems to enjoy the highest prosperity in the world. i've never heard of such a severe disaster that strips out the human being. |

OSAKI Shigekatsu, a loyal business man, a great educator and kind grandfather for every kid in a village in uzbekistan, has passed away. it was a mid summer in 1999 in a village in Ferghana valley that i met him for the first time. after he retired, he donated all his fund and built a small free japanese school for the local kids so that they could get a chances to link to the outer world. since that, the village became a centre of international communication, and the kids surprise the visitors with their excellent japanese and very fine curiosity. now his will has been firmly succeeded to lots of his supporters, and the kids are steadily growing with a very broad view of the world. i won't forget his kindness and always want to beg a lesson from him when i face to the hardship. osakisan, arigato. |

the 15th of august is a very important day for japan since japan surrendered on that day in 1945. but the day is also important for another reason, traditionally believed that the spirits of ancestors are returining to our world(obon). most of us go back all the way to the cemetary in their hometown and enjoy the reunion of the relatives with lots of memory of their ancestors. on this day, in nagasaki, my hometown, people build up huge ships on which the spirits of the dead ride on, and we pull them on the street to the river where we see the sprits off to the ancestors' world(shoro-nagashi festival). we use lots of firecrackers along the ship marching. obviously this day is the noisiest day in nagasaki, where i haven't been on this day for more than 10 years... |

60th summer has come to NAGASAKI, my lovely birthplace, since it underwent the tragedy of atomoc bomb. the mayor said at the ceremony, "To the citizens of the USA: We understand your anger over the memories of the 9/11 attacks. Yet, is your security enhanced by your government's policies of maintaining 10,000 nuclear weapons?" i just silently closed my eyes at the office in tokyo at 11:02, and thought of my over-80-year-old gramma who had lost her beloved daughter on 'that' day. |

IBRAHIM FERRER, a great musician of cuba, has passed away. just like most cuban-jazz lovers, i have been facstinated by his world of unique and comforting melody since the moviefilm 'buena vista social club' was released. i am writing this with listening to his album, which i hope will be even a little mourning from the courner of oriental islands. |

ROBIN COOK, ex-UK minister of foreign affairs, was reported to die. i'm never familiar to the politics, but i remember him as the person who opposed to Blair's decision over the Iraq war. i guess many might feel strange about his death since he was too young and it happened in the forest while his hiking alone. a 'good person' leaves fast. i just wish calm death may come to everyone. |
