Dream Theater Dream
Theater, a progressive heavy rock band, are made up of 5 members including,
James LaBrie as the front man on vocals, John Myung on the bass, John Petrucci
as the guitarist, Mike Portnoy as the drummer, and Jordan Rudess on the
keyboard. The first song i heard by Dream Theater was 'Honor Thy Father', and it just blew me away! It starts with a breathe taking drum solo/intro, and the guitar comes in, and it starts off-beat and then comes together with the guitar. It's very progressive and breathe taking. James LaBrie has a brillient voice and the band really do bring it together very well. This must still be one of my favourite songs by them. On their new album 'Octavarium' i would recommend checking out 'Panic Attack' and 'The Root Of All Evil', i wasn't very impressed with the rest because the vocals seemed very soppy, i prefer the previous albums personally and i don't think anyone should judge them on this album if you haven't heard any of their other stuff. Dream Theater were influenced by Metallica, you can really hear this in 'As I Am' from their album 'Train Of Thought' from the voice and how the guitar goes with it etc, but then again you can hear it in most of their songs, it's just very obvious in how James LaBrie sings the vocals. In 'Panic Attack' it sounds like they could have been influenced by Iron Maiden as well maybe, i don't think they were, but it sounds like they were from the guitar playing. I was very impressed with the lyrics in this song, definitely one to check out! I also made a very strange discovery.. I listened to 'The Root Of All Evil' for the first time and i was trying to think what the riff reminded me of.. and it was Velvet Revolver! 'Slither' by Velvet Revolver has exactly the same riff as this song by Dream Theater! I wonder how it happened, someone must have copied someone, but who? I haven't yet seen or heard of anyone else who has realised this.. but mannn.. i hope someone has, it's so strange. However, despite the riff being the same it is a very different song to velvet revolvers, with a brillient drum build up and great vocals with an amazing guitar solo like panic attack does as well.. I can't recommend one album because they all seem to be very good, i just don't recommend buying the latest album 'octavarium' to judge them on, but i will recommend the best songs that i think you should be able to judge them on for yourself.. Recommended Songs: Honor Thy Father, Panic Attack, The Root Of All Evil, As I Am. Endless Sacrifice (more of a 'classic' song and gets very progressive, good lyrics too) Hope you enjoy! Im now hooked on them and I have even got someone else hooked now, I hope you are one of them too if you like this sort of music! Many thanks to Abe for introducing them to me! Not many people around here have heard of them, but i hope that has changed now!
