Eels Review



A great new discovery i have made, Eels- not your typical band!
Eels aren't particularly new, but i never paid enough attention to them, the only song i had heard of them until a couple of days ago was 'beautiful freak' which is good, but you can't appreciate Eels without listening to much more.
This band is a great experimenting band of alternative rock, their style includes alternative pop/rock, post-grunge, and alternative indie, the band is lead by Mark Oliver Everett, he is singer/ songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who is also known as 'E'. He began to play the drums at the age of 6 and writing songs on the family piano and guitar.

'E' knows how to tell a great story in his songs, vocal style reminds me a lot of Bob Dylan. Most of the songs are very happy but yet you can find some music by them that is actually quite depressing like on their second album 'Electro-Shock Blues', but don't let this fool you, they much more likely to be cheerful and happy in their songs then regretful and dull.

Eels are definaltly a band i recommend for open minded people who wish to discover a new genre. They always experiment in their songs, i watched them play on 'Later with Jools Holland..' and they performed their song 'bus stop boxer' with string group in the background, violins etc (which isn't on the official recording), and their drummer in both songs was not playing a drum kit at all, but with some well arranged suitcases- it sounded ace!
Excellent musicians and dedicated music makers! Make sure you check them out!

You may recognise songs such as 'My Beloved Monster' which was played in the first 'Shrek' movie, and also the 'I Need Some Sleep' song was featured in the second Shrek movie 'Shrek 2'.
