A Reminder

This day at Christmount was a reminder for me.

I serve on the Christmount Board of Directors. One of my duties is to attend at least two of the three board meetings a year. Today was the first full day of this two night, two day meeting. During a Christmount Board Meeting the committees of the board meet on Sunday and Monday followed by the full board meeting on Tuesday morning. In some ways this is more a reunion than board meeting, but business is discussed, conducted, and decisions about the future are made. If you have never been to Christmount I recommend you make a trip with your group or attend one of the many program offerings for adults and youth.(1)

This day has served as a reminder for me. First, just as I prepare to go on holiday on Wednesday I have come down with either a summer cold or my allergies are acting up.(2) Reminder: I am a vulnerable human being. My companion, Lisa, often reminds me that I am not as young as I once was, and just because I think I can do a thing doesn’t mean I can. I loathe not being able to breath, sniffles, sneezing, headache, sinus pressure. I would rather vomit and get it over with rather than feel the way I feel today. Reminder: Hearing the prayer concerns tonight, and knowing that one of Kentucky’s pastors got bad news yesterday confirms for me how lucky I am.

I have walked the grounds today, and enjoyed the food here. This is the fourth time this year I have come to Christmount. I wandered by Water’s Garden. Over there is the gazebo that X Committee used for meetings.(3) I rocked for several minutes on the rocking chair patio. Reminder: I like the outdoors. It is where I first experience God as real in the world and in my life.

One of the things we discussed today is the mission of this place. During worship tonight we sang Seek Ye First, and I remembered singing that at Camp Wildurr, and at Athens, Ceta Glen, Brownwood, Texoma, Camp Christian, Kum-Ba-Ya and Wakon’ Da-Ho. A Reminder I wish I could share, pour into, convince others of: camp is not a specific place it is a state of mind that, like being a follower of Jesus, is a lifestyle choice. Intentional community, Christian or otherwise, is not an easy thing to pull off for five minutes, days, years, or hundreds of years.

I am grateful for the space that was created in my day for this reminder.

Notes
1. There, I got my board member plug in this post.
2. I am allergic to apples, oranges, bananas, and all milk products. Did I mention I love cheese? I guess a third option is that my stress level has reached a point where my body is saying, enough, though I don’t believe such things happen to me.
3. X Committee is the name for the Kentucky Region’s youth council. They attended a leadership event at Christmount this summer with others from the Regions from the southeast.
