Turn Off, Tune Out, Drop In
Kathleen Parker's column reminded me of some
folks I know that in one way or another gave up some kind of technology during
Lent. We are a TMI culture and I found her assessment of our difficulty sorting
through the noise to real facts and good information insightful and an
observation I would tend to
affirm.

The End of Christian America
I always like listening to, but more
importantly reading the work and thoughts of John Meacham. He reminds me of my
idealized notion that Americans seek out information, education, and dialogue
about big ideas and hard issues. Just when I think we are too much a fast food,
reality TV, self absorbed society, Meacham reminds me that there are segments
still able to learn from the past and apply those lessons to the
future.

Lincoln, Darwin change history, religious thought
This is a great article about Lincoln, Darwin and
the effect they each had on their time as well as how they continue to spur
conversation and debate here in the modern world. They share a birthdate, the
ability to see the field (reference to the movie 'The Legend of Bagger Vance'),
and inspire as well as offend.

Brief Inaugural Speech Thoughts
In a post for a later date I will spend a few
moments with my discomfort of all the God-talk and sermonizing by Christian
clergy at our secular government events. Neither the invocation nor the
benediction particularly represented Christianity or America
well.
President Obama's Inaugural Words
kept the audience quiet either because they were so moved or because many didn't
understand the relevance given the dominant 'reality TV' culture. I tried to
not have expectations, but I did. The speech felt five minutes too long, but
had a depth and authenticity that I think represents our new President. Now,
can he convince our congressional leaders like our own McConnell from Kentucky
who campaigned for re-election on the notion that he would be the gatekeeper to
Obama's vision and the evil desires of liberals.

What Happened with Robinson's Prayer?
I watched yesterday anticipating a prayer from
The Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire. It didn't
make air? What happened?

Non-negotiables
by Martin E. Marty, Sightings,
1/5/09
This is a great post from Marty
demonstrating the difference in thought and understanding about the separation
of Church (maybe we should say religion) and State.
