Controversy du jour - by Keith McAliley

Here in Kentucky the Governor's prayer breakfast is a yearly ritual. This year our Governor made a little news by holding a prayer breakfast that only had Christians participate in its leadership. A pastor from one of the congregations here in KY was actually there and has an interesting reflection on the event posted on his blog.

Last week, I got to participate in the annual Governor's Prayer Breakfast. My friend Shauna was invited to sing, and I accompanied her on the piano. I got to hear a great choir from Kentucky State. I got to meet the governor. I got to meet some nice people. Little did I realize I was part of something that the ACLU would soon investigate. Talk about a brush with fame . . . or brush with infamy perhaps.

I had thought that the prayer breakfast kind of played fast and loose with the separation of church and state, which, while it may not be in the Constitution, is not a bad idea. No state agency needs to be in the business of endorsing any particular religion. The ACLU and some other organizations suspect that that's what the governor was doing. You can read the article here and an editorial on the subject here. (And please remember that last Sunday's sermon was on the dangers of anger so don't get all worked up about this, whatever your opinion is.)
