January 20, 2006 - Epic Camp NZ Day 12
Last Day of Epic Camp. Maximum effort activities
today.
We were able to sleep in today. This is big
points day for those who are into the points competition. The activities today
included:Speed Miniature
Golf1 km Beach
Run1 km Bike Time
Trial400 Meter IM
Swim200 Meter Kick
Swim50 Meter
Swim(Pushup were scheduled but
skipped)Speed Miniature Golf was the
first activity of the day. I believe the scoring was the number of strokes to
complete all 18 holes plus the time required to do the course multiplied by 2.
Something like that, anyway I didn't really care it was more fun than
competitive. Everyone teamed up with a partner. One person played the holes
while the other kept score and the time. I teamed up with
Dan.
Above Left is Dan, Molina and Gordo.
Above Right is John and part of group, with more
below.
After the speed miniature golf
we drove the beach. This was a true 1 km run along the beach. John measured
out the course in the van and set out cones along the way. The run was down the
middle of the beach with the ocean on our right. The cones were set out to keep
us from running on the packed sand near the water – we had to run to the
left of the cones. After two weeks of serious fatigue and over use stress in
our legs, this was a very hard, very long run!
:-)Last night we were given our Epic
Camp swag which consisted of some Omph cycling shorts and matching sleeveless
jersey, some horrid floral print speedo trunks, and neoprene swim cap. Where of
these items was highly encouraged for todays activities. Some of the campers
can be seen in there Epic Camp swag at the beach run starting line
below.
After the beach run, we drove back to
Bottle Lake Lodge and got warmed up for the 1 km bike time trial. With all the
fatigue and soreness in our legs it was a good idea to warm up a bit. The
course ran along the road directly in front of the lodge. It was a fast maximum
effort event. I stomped out about a 28 mph average and got 8th place. Woo
hoo!The on to the QEII Aquatic Center.
We had 4 lanes to ourself so for the 400 IM four raced at a time. This is a 50
meter pool so doing a 400 IM was deadly! I've never done more than a 25 yard
fly in my life. I actually made it 50 meters to the wall and turned around then
fatigue set in in both my arms and legs. The last 25 meters or so I was sucking
water and trying to survive. I was so glad to do the back stroke so I could
breath. I was destroyed by the end and hardly had enough strength to pull
myself out of the pool. Then the 200
meter kick. We had 8 racing at one time. My legs were screaming in agony!
Afterwards I was wobbly kneed and my quads were quivering. Oh
my!The final swim event was a 50 meter
sprint. It was all out. I got in a pretty good heat as everyone hit the wall
right around 32 seconds. The Molina
took us to Dux de Lux, his favorite bar, for libations before the big end of
Epic Camp
dinner.
Gordo handing down some of his gear on
to noteworthy
campers.
Scott Davis presented thank you gifts
to the
staff.
