January 15, 2006 - Epic Camp NZ Day 7
Half Marathon and Sunny! Also swam 3 km in the
evening.
I woke up around 7:20 AM, dressed for the race
and headed down for a bowl of oatmeal and
coffee. The vans left for the race at
8:15 AM. The Half Marathon is a handicapped race, where everyone in the race
guesses their finish time and leave in appropriate waves. No one is allowed to
where a watch. John signed everyone up to run in just two of the running waves
- first and last. I'm in the last wave – which consisted of Epic Campers
and maybe 4 locals. The course is really nice. The course is out and back on a
road that road that follows a creek. The first have is paved, the later half is
a dirt road and is mostly in the shade.
I was dropped from my wave almost at
the gun and ran alone for the entire race. I got to see everyone running back
the other way. I was the last runner in and got the privilege of passing 5
walkers. 1:49:23 Half Marathon. Woo,
hoo!I ran the additional 10 minutes to
get a bonus for a 2 hour run. A nice consultation for the slow run
today.Afterward, Molina took a group
and Gordo took another group for a 60 km bike ride. I however, choose a nap
instead. I slept for 2.5 hours and felt much better afterwards and ready to
swim later in the afternoon.
A
group ready to head to the
pool.
Unfortunately, there were more
swimmers than van on this trip. It was a little
packed.
Swam
at the Stokes pool again. It was sunny and noticeably warmer. I swam with KP
for the first 2 km. We did a ladder set of 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, then back
down. Then Wim joined us and we swam the final 1 km non-stopped but the leader
would pull off after each 100 meters, and the next person would lead the next
100, etc. It was fun and made the time go bye
fast.We returned to the college to
find pasties, raspberries and strawberries! Now we're talking! We made
smoothies with the berries and bananas and boy was it
yummy!
