Charlie+Becky

JUNE 29, 2007

This is probably my favorite blog post to date! Charlie had contacted me and wanted us to document his marriage proposal to the love-of-his-life, Becky! Well, he had it all planned out, where, when, what, how, where he wanted us to be hiding, the music his brother was gonna be playing as he asked the big question, im telling you, every little detail was covered. So the big day was finally here, and, of course, things started getting a little hectic that day. First, the little hidden area he wanted to propose at was washed away by the high tide! Then the pounding of the waves at that time made it almost impossible to hear anything! So, I had arrived before him and realized all this and of course, i started getting VERY nervous. The problem was that he had Becky in the car with him already and that meant we counldnt really talk, and i had NO IDEA what he was gonna do now. All along, Charlie had told Becky that we were doing a "portrait" session. So, as they arrived at the beach, i think i was just as nervous as he was and we were trying to quickly figure things out as Dina briefly spoke to Becky! The amazing thing was how this "proposal" session had such a different energy than any other kind of session. I think the fact that we knew Charlie was about to ask such an important question and Becky had no clue of this, added to the excitement. But, like all of us guys, Charlie was very, very, very nervous! The funny thing was that i was too! And since i still didnt know when he was going to ask her, and i couldnt hear much because of the waves, i was rather confused when i started taking the wannabe "portraits" of them. I think Becky noticed i was all over the place, but she hung in there!

Ok, sorry about the long story, it was a great, exciting, funny, and emotion-filled day for everybody and i wanted to put in all details!

Here they are, Charlie and Becky......

....since i was nervous, our available light was dwindling, and i didnt know when charlie would ask, i think my "creative" mojo was kind of stalling. but as soon as i saw the "bat cave" in this next photo, i knew i had to shoot from inside there. sure enough, the cave framed them in a great way......keep in mind, i had no clue what was in there and when the waves crashed, i would scramble so that my equipment didnt get wet!....but it was well worth it!

...to try to calm down, charlie started practicing his "salsa" moves.....

....after briefly consulting with charlie and quietly telling him these were AWESOME IMAGES that i was getting from inside the bat-cave, he started getting ready to ask the big question.........

...dina did a great job with the telephoto lens from the opposite side i was shooting from...here's a couple of her shots....

....i love this reaction shot dina captured...

...another funny story...charlie had bought a ton of roses, but since the plans were drastically changed at the last minute, he couldnt present them to her how he had planned. instead, his kid brother was launching them from atop the cliff/rocks behind charlie. all i know is that they nearly missed clobbering the couple and myself! ....

...after the emotional proposal, we quickly took a few more portraits. i usually dont like the "silhoutte" thing, but these worked out great...

.....making use of the fish-eye......

....thank you charlie, for letting us be part of this VERY, VERY special occasion. I think every couple should at least think about photographing their proposal because its such a special, emotional, once-in-a-lifetime event!......
