Read what users are saying about SmartLedger.

SmartLedger's mission in life is to help you track income and expense without having to type numbers, dates, and names. SmartLedger makes use of pop-down lists that automatically grow as you use the program, so that you can click, rather than type, most of your information into the ledger.

If you don't have time for a full-blown financial program but need something more than a spreadsheet, SmartLedger may be just the tool for the job. (more )

Here's a snapshot of SmartLedger's main screen. Please scroll down for more about the program and instructions for downloading it.

Buy It

SmartLedger is try-before-you-buy software. You pay $20 to license and keep your own copy.

SmartLedger (cont'd)

SmartLedger is ideal for adding up randomly all those receipts you've stuffed into a grocery sack, awaiting your accountant's attention. Don't sort them out by hand—just start with the first one and continue till you reach the bottom of the bag. Leave sorting and subtotaling to the program.

Do you have a PayPal account? SmartLedger can import your PayPal account history automatically and give you the big picture on income/expense, subtotaled by category. For on-line sellers, an eBay Calculator is included for figuring fees and consignment percentages. To incorporate account history from any bank, use the Import Manually command under the SmartLedger Menu.

This application's apparent simplicity can be deceiving. Behind the scenes, a kind of artificial intuition helps you enter your transactions more quickly than you would believe possible.

SmartLedger is flexible and won't lock you into account reconciliations. Enter only the transactions that are meaningful to you or your accountant. Reconcile when you want to, using the checkboxes and Accounts button.

What's New in Version 3.3

  • What was up is down. The up-down buttons next to the date and check number fields now conform to their customary usage on devices we're familiar with at home: Up means "increase" and down means "decrease." (Formerly these buttons had a "page up/page down" orientation.)
  • Ten steps forward, two steps back . . . Import automation for PayPal accounts has been thoroughly revised to combine the best ideas from earlier releases of SmartLedger with new features. The setup screens for PayPal accounts now provide separate settings for manual entries and imported entries, giving you flexible control of the total column in the optional wide ledger. You can now use a minus symbol in the tax and fee columns to deal with exceptions to the rules — without upsetting the totals on your reports.
  • The eBay Calculator now displays its opening remarks and sets the default printing preferences as intended. This free eBay calculator lets you figure your online seller's fees and consignment fees in advance, so you know what to charge for an item before you put it up for sale. The list view provides a running total of profit or loss from items you've sold.

  • Tips for a Happy Installation

Mac OS X users, please note: The software needs to be copied from the Install SmartLedger disk image to your computer's hard disk or a flash drive before it can be used. It will not run properly on the downloaded disk image itself. Think of the downloaded file as a packing crate that the software arrives in. You can get rid of the packaging after copying the enclosed SmartLedger Folder to your computer.

Windows and Mac Classic users, please note: Use the installer only once (it's the file that looks like a coffee grinder). You want only one installation of the software on your computer. Think of the downloaded file — ledgerinstall — as a packing crate that the software arrives in. You can get rid of it after unpacking the SmartLedger Folder that it contains.

All users: You can place the SmartLedger Folder wherever you like on your machine, but please keep all of its files together in the same folder so that they can talk to each other. The desktop is a perfectly good place to install the SmartLedger Folder. (One exception: You should not install it in the system folder.)

Registered users of prior releases: Please contact me if you have any difficulty upgrading to the most recent release of SmartLedger. Simply reply by email to the "Thank you" message you received at purchase time and explain the trouble. Registered (paid) can always upgrade to the most recent version free of charge.

PriceUpdater™ and LinkCaddy™ users, please note: SmartLedger is included in PriceUpdater and LinkCaddy. A second installation of SmartLedger on the same computer is not recommended.
