South Africa: More Kruger National Park

We could easily have spent more time exploring the rich wildlife of Kruger...

The VERY hard-to-find caracal
Nobody messes with rhinos...
...except other rhinos
We learned that lions sleep 20 out of every 24 hours...
...much to the delight of the impala
Cape buffalo
Big animals, big horns
The cry of the African fish eagle is memorable
Tuna's binocular technique is more horizontal
The only shade on the savannah
Mongoose peeking out of a termite mound
Cape buffalo in the river become water buffalo
Notice that rhinos sleep facing opposite directions
Our friend the ground hornbill, w/long eyelashes
These giraffes galloped across the road...
...along with their ox-pecker passengers
Yellow-billed hornbill, aka the flying banana
Crested barbet
Impala jousting for dominance
Waterholes provide a lot of action in the dry season
This gives you a sense of the giraffes' size!
One always looks out while the other drinks
They're really quite graceful
On our morning walk we heard a leopard calling
Parts of the park were on fire--not abnormal
Lilac-breasted roller
Even hippos are cute when they're tiny
Zebras greet each other thusly
The rivers are gorgeous, except for the crocs
Egret in the Olifants River
Impala lily
A pride of 5 lionesses ran this waterhole
The gigantic baobab tree--actually a succulent
After 5 weeks, baboon young ride jockey-style
Our open-air kitchen at camp
Rob and Karen
Baboons looking for burnt bugs...
...while the rhinos guard the remaining grass
