Foreign student enrollment continues to decline
According to the Dow Jones, the number of foreign
graduate students enrolling at American universities for the first time declined
by 6%. It's the third year in row that such enrollment has
declined.
Despite all the hand-wringing over concerns that
America's position as the world's leader in higher education is eroding, we
would need to know where the decline is greatest: in the hard sciences, or in
the humanities and social sciences. Enrollment should be declining in the
humanities and the social sciences, because American Universities have nothing
to offer there. The Left has made sure of that. But even if a decline is being
suffered in the hard sciences, this doesn't necessarily mean that America's
world position in education is suffering a decline. Note that the decline has
only occurred in the last three years. In other words, since September 11, 2001.
Isn't that what we would expect?
