Mac OS 10.3.6 Update Fixes 10.3.5 Font Issues

At long last Apple has released a fix for the font problem(s) first introduced in their OS 10.3.5 update (which you can read more about in my article Font Problems with the OS 10.3.5 Update in the OS X Issues section of Font Geek).

The Mac OS 10.3.6 update addresses a number of issues. The most significant (to me) is that it addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.3.5 in which some glyph fonts, certain "Expert" and/or "dingbat" fonts, would no longer appear in some applications. If you're interested in all of the issues that this update changes on your system, you can refer to Apple's About the Mac OS X 10.3.6 Update (Combo) knowledge base article.

If you're concerned about applying a brand new update to your otherwise stable system, I applaud your paranoia. As with any update, I tend to think that you shouldn't update unless you have a reason to. But since this issue addresses a fairly serious font display problem, I consider it a worthy update to run. If it makes you any less fearful, I installed it without issue and have now run most of my programs on my newly updated PowerBook. And so far, I have also not seen a significant or wide-spread problem other than problems with some external FireWire hard drives (seen Apple's note below) reported on any of the online forums.

Important Note from Apple:
Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple recommends you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive manufacturer for more information.

You can apply the 34 Mb delta update (if you're already running OS 10.3.5) through the Software Update Preference Pane in the System Preferences or under the Apple Menu. If you are running an older version of OS 10.3, the 92 Mb Combined Updater will show up in your software update list. You can also download and/or read about the 92 Mb Combined Update on Apple's Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.6 readme page.

System Requirements: You must be running Mac OS 10.3 or later to apply this free update.

Good Job Apple!
