| QuarkXpress 6.x - Font Fix Script | | Date Created: 23 Jan, 2005, 06:04 PM |
A little known font problem has cropped up regarding QuarkXpress 6.x. It seems that the fonts used by Quark are actually cached in a folder called ttfonts in the Jaws folder inside the QuarkXPress 6 application folder. And it also seems that this folder doesn't always update to reflect newly added/activated fonts on a user's system. |
Fortunately Wolfgang Schilder and Brian Summa from Chesapeake Systems, (an authorized Apple Service provider for the Baltimore / Washington area) have provided us a script to help with this problem. I emailed Wolfgang to find out more about this issue and their solution.
Here's what Wolfgang had to say...
Wolfgang: "We experienced problems with fonts in QuarkXPress 6.x on three of our clients' G5's. Quark's font data base appears to be stuck in limbo with only the fonts visible which were originally present during Quarks initial installation. Quark seemed to ignore any fonts installed after the application was installed. Our on-site techs tracked the problem down to the "ttfont" folder." |
"As Brian is a FinalCutPro guru, and I am a wrench, none of us dabble too much with fonts (other than weeding them out when they misbehave) we just like to dabble with AppleScript to provide easy solutions to a problem. Brian and I modified a existing similar script which removes a AppleWorks cache file (which I wrote for a friend who is a heavy AppleWorks user) after he experienced frequent slow downs traceable to a overburdened cache file. Then Brian and I made the script available to our techs (at Chesapeake Systems) and then anyone else who wanted it." |
Running the script removes the ttfont folder -- which is regenerated the next time QuarkXPress 6.x is used.
Using the script is very easy...
1. You need to download the freeware zipped QuarkFontFixv2.scpt.zip AppleScript file either from MacScripter.net or from Font Geek . |
| 3. Move the QuarkFontFixv2.scpt script to the Scripts folder in your home scripts folder (home / Library / Scripts). |
 |
Note: If you don't have a Script menu at the top of your screen you will need to install your AppleScript menu. If you already have your Script menu installed, please skip ahead to Step # 6.
4. To get your AppleScript menu to show at the top of your screen, find the AppleScript folder in the Applications folder on your hard drive. |
 |
5. Double-click on the Install Script Menu application (in the AppleScript folder) and a black script icon will appear close to the right side on the menu bar on your screen.
6. Select the Open Scripts Folder under the Script menu at the top of your screen. |
 |
| 7. Then drag the QuarkFontFixv2.scpt wherever you want within the Scripts folder. |
 |
| 8. Select the QuarkFontFixv2.scpt from under the Scripts menu. |
 |
| 9. You will be prompted about trashing the 'ttfont" folder for QuarkXPress. |
 |
If you have a document open the authors ask that you save your documents and quit QuarkXPress before proceeding. Once you've done that, click on the OK button on this first dialog box (above).
10. The script will then scan your hard drive and choose what it thinks is the appropriate QuarkXPress application folder. If what it shows you in the second dialog box (below) is the correct one, click the OK button. |
 |
If the script chooses the wrong QuarkXPress folder, click the cancel button and move the incorrect QuarkXPress Application folder temporarily to the trash (where the script won't find it) and run the script again.
Note: If you need the other QuarkXpress application folder, make sure you move the other QuarkXPress Application folder back to your hard drive before you empty your trash.
11. When the AppleScript has successfully removed the ttfont folder it will prompt you with a third dialog box (below) letting you know that it's done. |
 |
12. Click the OK button and relaunch QuarkXPress 6.x to carry on with your work.
If you were having problems seeing some of your fonts, you should be able to see them now from under the Fonts submenu under Style menu or from the font section of the Measurements palette.
Side Note: I have also found that this script can help if I have problems creating a PDF document via Quark's Export Layout as PDF feature (File Menu / Export / Layout as PDF). When I have trouble exporting out to PDF format, I have found that running this script and/or removing any data left in the temp folder at the same level (Macintosh HD / Applications / QuarkXPress 6 /jaws / temp) usually allows me to successfully create a PDF in this manner. |
 |
This is not a script that needs to be run all the time. But if you find that your fonts are not showing up in QuarkXPress the way you think they should -- or if you find that you're having problems successfully making a PDF from QuarkXPress, you might want to give this little script a try.
Thank you Wolfgang Schilder and Brian Summa for this great little utility script. |
