| How To Use - Font Finagler | | Date Created: 05 Nov, 2004, 05:36 AM |
In this article I will show you way(s) that I use Mark Douma's Font Finagler utility.
This is a very useful utility. For more information on what Font Finagler is and why you might need to use it, please refer to the article titled "Utility - Font Finagler" also located in the Resources section of this web site.
There are two ways to use Font Finagler, so I'm going to break them out in different sections in this article. |
But first things first...
1. You need to download Font Finagler (developed by Mark Douma) at http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fontfinagler/FontFinagler.dmg.
2. Once the disk image is downloaded and mounted on your desk you will see that it asks you to copy the Font Finagler application folder to your Applications folder (on your hard drive). |
Tip: The Application folder alias in the disk image window is an alias of your Application folder. If you drag the Font Finagler folder onto the Applications folder alias in that same window it will copy Font Finagler to your own Applications folder. (I'd also like to say that this is a very cool feature of the installation. Kudos Mark.)
Once you've done that you can Eject the "Font Finagler 0.5.2" disk image (click on the disk image and drag it to the trash can or type Command + E).
3. Prior to running Font Finagler, I recommend quitting all open applications.
4. Locate the Font Finagler application (in the Font Finagler application folder in the Applications folder on your hard drive) and launch the application. You will be notified that you can run the application 10 times before you need to register it. |
| 5. If you are planning to run the application as an administrative user, continue on to step #6. If you're planning on running the application as a non-administrative user skip to step # 11. |
To use Font Finagler as an Administrative User...
6. Click on the Inspect Font Cache Files button in the lower right corner of the Font Finagler application window. You will see progress bars run across the center top of the application. |
| 7. The various font cached files will be listed in the Font Finagler application window. Click on the Clean Font Cache Files button in the lower right corner of this same application window. |
| 8. You will be prompted to enter your Administrative password in the Authenticate dialog box. Do so and click on the OK button. |
| 9. The font cache files will be cleared and then you will be prompted to either Restart or Shut Down your computer. Pick Shut Down if you're done for the day. Otherwise click on the Restart button and wait for your computer to restart. |
10. You're done. Carry on with your day.
To use Font Finagler as an Non-Administrative User...
11. If the software worked well for you as an Administrative User and you want to use it again (past the 10th free use) or if you want to run the application as a Non-Administrative User, you will need to register the application. You can purchase/register this software by selecting the Register Font Finagler menu option from under the Font Finagler menu and then clicking the Purchase Online button in the Register Font Finagler dialog box. (You can also purchase the serial number directly online for $10 at eSellerate by clicking here.) |
| 12. The serial number you need to enter will be provided in your browser at the time of online purchase. Copy and paste the registration/serial number in the registration field in Font Finagler and click OK. The program is now usable past 10 uses as an Administrative user and the Non-Administrative user features are now available to you as well. |
| 13. Click on the Admin-Free Font Cache Cleaner icon in the upper right corner of the Font Finagler application window. |
| 14. Then click on the Enable Admin-Free FCC button on the Administrator-Free Font Cache Cleaner application window. |
| 15. This will bring up a new Administrator dialog box. You will need to click on the lock icon in the lower left corner of this dialog box where is says to "Click the lock to make changes." |
| 16. The "Click the lock to make changes." text will be replaced with text that say's "Authenticating." At the same time an Authenticate dialog box will appear prompting you to enter your password. Do so and click the OK button. |
| 17. Click the Enable Administrator-Free Font Cache Cleaner check box in the Administrator dialog box and then close the Administrator dialog box by clicking on the Red (close window) button at the top left corner of this dialog box. |
| 18. Click on the Inspect Font Cache Files button in the lower right corner of the Administrator-Free Font Cache Cleaner application window. You will see progress bars run across the center top of the application. |
| 19. The various font cached files will be listed in the Administrator-Free Font Cache Cleaner application window. Click on the Clean Font Cache Files button in the lower right corner of this same application window. |
| 20. The font cache files will be cleared and then you will be prompted to either Restart or Shut Down your computer. Pick Shut Down if you're done for the day. Otherwise click on the Restart button and wait for your computer to restart. |
21. You're done. Carry on with your day.
Note: There is a very good "ReadMe.rtfd" document included with the software once it's downloaded. I strongly recommend that you read it prior to using the software.
You will find reviews/articles of dfontifier and Font Book Helper (both from Mark Douma) in the near future in the Resources section of Font Geek.
Coming Soon... We'll be posting an interview with Mark Douma where he'll be talking to us about dfontifer, Font Finagler, and other thoughts he has about fonts and the Mac OS. |
