How To Use - Deep Six

In this article I will show you way(s) that I use If Then Software's - Deep Six utility.

It's a fairly easy to use and straight forward utility. For more information on what Deep Six is and why you might need to use it, please refer to the article titled "Utility - Deep Six" also located in the Resources section of this web site.

Here is how I use Deep Six. I have had fairly good luck with it in the past...

1. You need to download Deep Six (developed by the good folks at If Then Software) at http://www.ifthensoft.com/deepsix.hqx

2. Launch the Deep Six application. You can proceed when you see the message "Ready to begin" in the main application interface.

3. Prior to running Deep Six, I recommend quitting all open applications.

4. One of the choices you need to make prior to running Deep Six is whether or not to delete the Microsoft Office font cache files. To choose this option, click the check-box above the "Display Log" button on the Deep Six application interface. Personal Preference: I like this feature and I allow Deep Six to remove those files for me when I run the application.

5. The other choice you need to make is whether or not to have your font caches automatically removed when launching the application. To choose this option, click the check-box above the "Donate" button on the Deep Six application interface. Personal Preference: I don't like this option, but it does have some merrit if you are trying to prevent problems for a lot of computers or trying to automate the process.

If you are going to use this Automatic option, please keep reading, otherwise you can skip down to step #9.

6. If you want to really automate Deep Six, you need to check the "Run Automatically on Launch" check box, click on the "Run DeepSix" button, and then close the application.

7. If you want this process to happen every time you start (or restart) your computer open your system preferences and add the Deep Six application to your "Start Up" items in your Accounts preference panel. You can do this by dragging the application from a Finder window to the Startup Items window.

This will cause Deep Six to launch and execute (if the "Run Automatically on Launch" check box is checked) each time the computer is restarted -- making sure that the font caches are "clean."

Note: If you are using Jaguar (OS 10.2.x) you will need to add the Deep Six application to the Login Items in the System Preferences.

8. Once the program runs and clears the caches you just need to quit the Deep Six application and proceed with your work.

9. If you want to run the program manually, click the "Run DeepSix" button. The results will display in the main application interface.

10. Once Deep Six has run and displayed it's results, you can check the results by clicking on the "Display Log" button. If you don't care, then quit the program and carry on with your day.

11. If the software works well for you and helps solve some of your problems, I would like to encourage you to donate a few dollars by clicking on the "Donate" button. It's the best way to make sure the good folks at If Then Software keep up the good work.

Note: If you experience problems with Deep Six, please refer to the "Troubleshooting - Deep Six" article.
