CORE VALUES for January 2009

Some of the purposes of Cub Scouting developed through this month’s theme are:
¸ Fun and Adventure - Cub Scouts will have fun playing their favorite games and learning new ones.
¸ Personal Achievement - Boys will feel a sense of personal achievement as they master puzzles, mazes, and new games.
¸ Sportsmanship and Fitness - Cub Scouts will learn fair play and respect for others

The core value highlighted this month is:
¸ Honesty, Cub Scouts will learn the importance of following the rules and being honest while playing games.
Can you think of others??? Hint – look in your Cub Scout Program Helps. It lists different ones!! All the items on both lists are applicable!! You could probably list all twelve if you thought about it!!

A Wise Word or Two -

As we scramble through this holiday season, keep in mind how many lives you touch in your Scouting life. You will be amazed if you add up the Cub Scouts, their siblings, parents, grandparents, Chartered Organizational personnel, fellow Scouters - just to name a few. Then, take those names and faces and multiply by the number of years you have been a Scout leader. My, that is a lot of lives, isn’t it?

When you feel burned out and ready to take a break, take a mental vacation and realize what a difference you are making and just how many lives you have touched. The folks you are involved with may never tell you how important you are, but they know how great your sacrifice is. Next, find a parent to start doing one of the many things you do every week and give them the opportunity to serve the youth. And finally, thank God that you are able and willing to give your time and energy to His children and be grateful. You are making a difference and it is all worth it.

Hoping you and your family have a Blessed Holiday.

THINGS COMING UP

CROSS OVERS AND GRADUATIONS
Prepare a memoriable end of the year ceremony for your boys as they Cross Over into the next rank. Make it fun. Have your parents participate in the ceremony.

DAY CAMP
It’s not too late to sign up. It may cost a bit more but boys can still register. Don’t let your Cub Scouts pass up this opportunity.

PLAN YOUR LEADERSHIP FOR NEXT YEAR
Recruit nerw leaders in your open positions. Have them register, take FAST START training on line as well as YOUTH PROTECTION training, also available on line. Create a roster of your leaders for next year and be one step ahead of the game.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE PROGRAM KICK OFF
AUGUST 13, 2009 is our annual Kick Off. Watch your email for exact time and place. This is the night each unit receives their packet of calendars and info for the new Scouting year.

NATIONAL SUMMERTIME PACK AWARD
A pack can qualify for the National Summertime Pack Award certificate and streamer by planning and conducting three pack activities—one each in June, July, and August. This award can be an incentive for greater attendance at your summer pack activities. Your Pack can attend a baseball game, go bowling or putt-putt, have a cookout, spend the day at Sun Splash—whatever sounds like fun to you. Don’t forget to file your Tour Permit at least two weeks in advance of your Pack activity!!

Qualifying packs receive a colorful streamer for their pack flag. Dens with an average attendance of at least half their members at the three summer pack events will be eligible for a colorful den participation ribbon. Boys who participate in all three pack events are eligible to receive the National Summertime Pack Award pin, which they can wear on the right pocket flap of their uniform.

The purpose of the National Summertime Pack Award is to encourage packs to provide a year-round program by continuing to meet during the time periods when school is out of session for several weeks or months. If a pack is in a "year-round school" (or is part of a home-school association), the pack could earn the Summertime Pack Award by having a special pack activity during those breaks. An application for the National Summertime Pack Award may be downloaded from the Cub Scout forms page

What Cub Scout Families want from Cub Packs...

Here are 3 things that Cub Scout families want from their son’s pack:

1. Active Fun.
Most parents will not bring their boys to Cub Scouts if they are not having fun. They just won’t. Make sure that the boys in your pack get to do games and other active fun stuff – preferably in the outdoors.

2. Well Organized.
Parents like packs in which the activities are well planned and which have good communication between leaders and with scout families.
They want to know that there is a plan for what the pack will be doing and that the plan has been well communicated. Email, phone calls, schedules, and newsletters all help with communication and organization.

3. Advancements.
Boys should be earning their rank badges as the year progresses, and they should receive recognition for the advancements they have earned.
There should be a clear procedure (which gets carried out) for who in the pack is responsible for recording advancements, for turning in the required paperwork, and for presenting the badges at the appropriate time.
