Lyon Family

Lyman R Lyon was one of the pioneers of Lewis County from whom Lyons Falls received it's name. His father Caleb Lyon Sr., was a land agent for a Mr. Greig who owned most of the land in the area. Caleb Sr. and later Lyman began buying up the land. Lyman owned the land around what is now Lyons Falls while his brother, Caleb Jr., owned the land around what is now Lyonsdale.

Lyman built a large barn in hopes of becoming a farmer. It was begun in 1859, before the Civil War. It wasn't finished until 1868 because Lyman, a strong abolitionist, encouraged his workers to join the Union Cause. The limestone was quarried on the west side of Black River and when winter came it was sledded across the river to the east site, where the barn was being built. He decided to build such a large structure because he didn't want the upkeep of several smaller buildings. It housed over 100 miliking cows, hay and other crops, young stock and oxen. It was 4 stories high. When it was torn down 3 barns, of ordinary size, were built from it.

Lyman R Lyon died April 7, 1869 in Savannah Georgia , whence he had gone to recover his health which had been seriously impaired by over work and anxiety over the war. His large timber estate was left to his three daughters, Mary L. Fisher, Julia J. deCamp and Florence L. Merriam and was divided equally amonth them in 1886. See link below to the deCamp family Bed & Breakfast in Thendara.

Through marriage, the Lyon family, the Merriam family and the Fisher family all became prominent in the Lyons Falls area.
