Day one - arrival ceremonies
Minutes after islandfall, a Digital Humanist looks west; Haleakala, the House of the Sun, looms behind her.
The expedition continues north, and the island of Lanai is seen from the 4200 block of the Lower Hanoapi'ilani Highway. This sight leads mysteriously, yet inevitably, to...
...the ritual sacrifice of a defenseless, but incredibly tasty, dessert. The following sequence documents a little seen island ceremony.
First, the sacrificial victim is slowly dismembered.

Another celebrant, bearing a second instrument of sacrifice, joins in.
Finally, as the light of day fades, the victim gives up its last essence and the uneasy island spirits are placated.
