Day Five - a three hour tour
It is now clear to the expedition that the snorkel ritual is central to the island's culture. Aboard this vessel they will plumb snorkel's mysteries.
The voyage begins with a priestly invocation, the recitation of the ancient island myth, "The Voyage of Gil-a-gan".
Other voyagers agree to participate in the acting out of the myth. These have chosen to fulfill the ritual roles of Jin-jer, Mar-i-ahn, and the dark spirit, Howl.
The Gil-a-gan myth seems to lie at the heart of snorkel, and there are many rival re-enactments taking place on this day.
One such re-enactment ends with a burnt sacrifice, or barbiku.
