Biodiversity and Endangered Species
Land Cover 2004
Biodiversity refers to the variety of species found in a region or ecosystem. Many scientists believe we are on the cusp of the 6th great extinction of species caused primarily by people like us.
Endangered species are those plants and animals that are not yet extinct, but, whose numbers are severely reduced often due to habitat destruction and/or poaching.
A worldwide treaty called CITES aims to protect endangered species by officially listing them and getting countries to agree not to allow the trade of endangered wildlife or wildlife parts (e.g. ivory from elephant tusks).
