I grew up in
mid-coast Maine, where a wonderful high school teacher first sparked my interest in Classics. I also developed (or inherited) a passion for baseball, the
Boston Red Sox in particular. After two years at
Hampshire College I entered the working world full-time, and moved to Chicago. For
several years I worked as an editor for trade magazines in the bicycle and metalworking industries, before resuming my education in 1997 at the
University of Chicago. In my three years at Chicago I enjoyed the broadly based liberal education of the
core curriculum,
and while continuing to study the
Classics my interests shifted from Greek philosophy to Latin poetry. I graduated from Chicago in 2000 and moved to Providence, where I began the
graduate program in
Classics at
Brown University. My wife, Anna, is a photographer and is looking forward to finding new subjects wherever we move next. Currently, she also teaches photography and chairs the art department at
Providence Country Day School. When we're not busy with our own work, we can often be found (or lost) hiking and camping, traveling, playing with Dingo (our mutt), cooking, listening to music, or reading.
