Step by step

On this page I intend to demonstrate the rebuilding of a badly damaged Julip one stage at a time. BEFORE YOU START! First of all decide if you really want to repair your Julip. Some of the methods used are irreversible. It may be better to live with small scratches etc. rather than do anything drastic. I only work on horses that can't be salvaged any other way. Since all the models are different, each restoration project is individual and not every technique is suited to each project. 1) To start with here is a very poorly pony in need of some help. His legs and feet have gone gummy with

age as have his ears. His body is fine and he has good hair which I hope to keep in place. Looking at the style of his eyes I believe he may be fairly old.


		Here is a close up of his leg to show how the latex has perished. To avoid this, Julips need very careful storage when they are not being played with. They need to be kept cool and out of strong sunlight. This will prevent them from perishing.

	2) The next step seems cruel but believe me, it is all for the best! Any areas of unstable gluey latex have to be removed with a sharp knife. If you are a child then I suggest that you seek help from an adult for this part, knives need to be used responsibly. If the model's leg wires have broken, then cut off the leg at the point of the break and insert new wires to support the leg. I use several thicknesses of thin wire wound together and glued in with a solvent based clear adhesive. Again, I suggest adult help here as some glues give off nasty fumes. Make sure you are working in a well ventilated area.
