After the original Smack Hits featuring original and covers of song about heroin, we bring you another joy-filled night of songs inspired by death. What other theme could be more perfect for a balmy summer evening in Stoke Newington?
Curated and originated by Sarah Kaldor and Lorraine Liyanage
No, we don’t promote the use of drugs but we all know and love several songs that do!
The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd… Extraordinary bands with songs that are known all over the world and so many of them are about drugs. A quick look at the list on Wikipedia
shows a list as long as your arm – many of which you may have not realised are songs inspired by illicit substances.
It’s a curious thing for non-junkies to relate to songs about drugs. Poets and songwriters often tackle difficult and taboo subjects like infidelity, abuse and death. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what the inspiration is, they are simply damn good songs and should be heard again. Smack Hits is a gig of covers, bar the odd smattering of original tunes. It is a far different experience to hear these songs live with a collective consciousness rather than on your own whilst powdering your nose (getting ready for a night out).
