TOPS evolved out of a previous project whose working title was "Small Wars," an embodiment of the myriad civil, racial, ethnic, religious, etc wars constantly in progress thoughout the world. Researching the topic was so despressing that I made little headway. I discovered, however, that the U.S. State Dept. keeps annual records of terrorist attacks, called "Patterns of Global Terrorism." There are many other information sources.
Each "bead" here represents a single year and the diameter of the bead is proportionate to the number of terrorist-caused deaths for that year. The bottom disk is, of course, 2001. The early attacks were by the Palmach and related groups in (then) Palestine as Isreal fought the British for control of the region. Subsequent attacks were perpetrated by Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists, among others. To the best of my knowledge no deaths can be ascribed to secular humanists. |
