The form of the sculpture is derived from population estimates beginning in the year 1 and ending in the year 3000.
At the time the sculpture was being planned the United Nations estimated that world population was going to level off at about 11 billion people by the year 2050. The current estimate - you may be reassured to know - has been reduced to 9.4 billion people, making the sculpture technically incorrect. On the other hand, world population has more than tripled just this century. Shows what clean water, sewerage, hand washing and a few more calories in the diet can do. |
