About Southern District YBL

"The purpose of this league shall be to further our understanding of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, to foster better relations and understanding among member chapters, and to coordinate their activities."

Young Buddhist Associations (YBA) age ranges can vary from Middle School ages to College, and can take many forms including YBA, Sr. YBA, or Jr. YBA.

Most Chapter associations have formed District leagues which allow them to meet peers from across the US.

The YBA's provide experiences in which it's members can generally expect to…

Deepen their understanding of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism

YBA provides many activities for a youth to embrace the Buddhist experience. Along with Sunday Services, Religious activities can range from Conferences, Seminars, Retreats, and Study Classes. These activities provide outlets for youths to begin exploring Buddhism in an atmosphere that they feel comfortable in, while also being surrounded by many of their peers.

Have fun and meet new people in social activities

Social activities may include things like ski trips, dances, sports, amusement parks, camping, etc. Many times either the social or religious activities are done in conjunction with other YBA/Jr. YBA's in or out of the District. There are many opportunities to meet peers from all parts of California, or other states like Washington, Arizona, or Utah.

Develop Leadership skills

YBA groups are run by the youth members themselves, with adult 'Advisors' to guide and direct them. Youths can take leadership positions like President, Treasurer, or a Religious Chairperson. YBA’s offer a person a chance to grow and become involved in Temple planning by developing their own 'For Youth-By Youth' programs.

Contribute to the Temple

Whether it's helping to clean-up, chairing service, serving lunch to the Sangha, or another activity, the Sr./Jr YBA's actively contribute in Temple life. The Temple is a foundation from which these groups can branch out and maximize their full potential, and it is only because of Temple members support and nurturing that a Sr/Jr. YBA can flourish..
