The
Last Communication of Samuel F.B. Morse
Piano
I wrote this piece with Matt Walton using an
experimental compositional technique. Though not necissarily
ground breaking, writing the piece one measure at a time, (alternating
measures, he wrote the first, third fifth etc., I wrote the second,
fourth sixth etc.), it was none the less and interesting way to compose
a piece of music. In the end the piece is unique in it's
compositional fingerprint and also has a surprising continuity to it.

Cabaret Songs
- In My Dreams
- I Need The Man
Musical Theater
In My
Dreams is for tenor and I Need the Man is for Soprano Belter and
Baritone. I produced a recording of these songs in my home
studio. I wrote the music and the lyrics, though I admittedly had
a little more success with the former. The demo is of In My
Dreams.

Lifeskills
of an Eagle
Band, CD and Chorus
This is a piece commissioned by
the Society for New Music for a program called Composers In The
Schools. This was an interesting collaboration between myself and
the students at Elmwood Elementary School in Syracuse, NY. The
kids wrote the lyrics and I guided them through the process of writing
a melody to their lyrics. I finished off the arrangements, added
a prologue and postlude for the band and a dance number for the dance
group and the kids rehearsed and performed it for their school
community.

Soprano and Piano
Originally intended to be the
first movement in a suite, this piece with lyrics by my sister, Lori
Loffredo, ended up just being a singleton.

Narrator, Flute, Clarinet, Marimba/Vibes, Cello
This is a four movement chamber
piece set to 11 poems by Shel Silverstein which are narrated throughout
the piece. This is a piece where every combination of
instrumentation is taken advantage of to match with the diversity of
moods in all of the poems.

Broken
Glass - A Movement in Three
Pieces
Alto Saxophone and Piano
This is a
piece that I wrote for a really good saxophone player I knew in
college. This piece uses a handful of advanced compositional and
performance techniques including 12 tone rows, minimalism, quarter
tones and circular breathing (for the saxophone player of
course). Surprisingly, all of these techniques blend into a
pretty picture on a whole, sort of like a pile of broken stained glass.

A
Dream of Retarded Children
Soprano w/live voice processor and Synthesizer
This piece is set to text by
Robert Bly, whom actually wrote back in response to a request for
permission to record the piece and told me he thought the music "sounds
like a bunch of Stalinists in 1942 trying to be capitalists." (I
can't win 'em all). The Synthesizer uses a lot of sound effects
and is presented in quadraphonic sound.

War
Suite
Soprano and Piano
This piece is a five movement
suite which draws texts from such varying sources as the Bible to
Wilfred Owen to myself. With theater at the heart of this piece,
War Suite takes a journey through the mind of a warrior before, during
and after a battle. It explores the massive mood swings
associated with war from prayer to anger to solace. There is a
little bit of inside-the-piano playing in this piece, but no "prepared
piano". Eventually, I would like to expand this piece for
orchestra and possibly chorus.

The
Fugal Gourmet
Two performers with tables of food
Yes, that's right, this piece
actually uses food as instruments. On our first collaboration
together, Matt Walton and I decided to go the experimental route.
This piece is actually a transcription of a Bach Two-Part
Invention. All of the pitches in the piece were first transfered
to about 12 notes minus accidentals and with an absence of octave
differential. Then each "pitch" was replaced by the sound of a
specific food either being eaten, chopped, rustled, opened,
etc... For example, the sound of a carrot being bitten, or the
sound of ice falling in a glass, or a cucumber being chopped.
Each performer had the same set up, and so you could listen and watch
the fugue unfold as the performers move from side to side on their
tables. I'm proud to claim that this is perhaps, the messiest
piece of music ever written.
