Web and Internet
I've come to depend on these sites for free reliable information. In many cases they can be lifesavers if you're building course web sites from the ground up, or just want to learn more about life on the internet. If you're looking for flashy stuff, these sites won't supply any. The sites I've chosen stress standards, compatibility, accessibility, organization, and intelligibility, because frankly there is no point in putting information on the web if it's incompatible with various browsers, riddled with errors, slow to load, disorganized, difficult or impossible to navigate, or inaccessible. Free Search engines
- FreeFind
- Google Free
- PicoSearch
- WebGlimpse Free license for educational and non-profit groups. Caveat: you need a working understanding of basic UNIX commands, and you must know the location of Perl on your server, the conditions, if any, under which you can run CGI programs, and whether (god forbid) CGI Wrap is installed on the server.
FreedFind, Google, and PicoSearch provide remote hosting for the search index, which is very nice if you're short of disk space.
