writing my first grant application. Writing a grant was definitely on my To Do
List this year! Grant funds are available to individual artists through many
charitable organizations so I wanted to start getting some practice at it. It
was a tough exercise, but fun!
This particular grant that I applied for, is the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation's Artist Advancement Grant. The grant is only available to regional artists in Southern New Hampshire. I appreciated their easy to follow application! It helped take the mystery out of the process and made writing my first grant a great experience. You'll note that GETTING a grant is not on my TO DO LIST this year. It is on my WISH LIST, my WOW, WOULDN'T THAT BE FANTASTIC LIST! Wow, wouldn't that be fantastic? Posted at 09:55 AM Read More Sat - March 5, 2005February UpdateSorry for so few posts in February. I
spent much of the month visiting family and friends while escaping the New
Hampshire winter. March is almost as busy, but I think I'll be able to squeeze
in some time to paint.
Here I am at Seven Falls, Colorado. I'm going to jot down some thoughts and bits of news and call it a blog entry! Today's allegory: Managing art is a lot like preparing college applications. Every gallery/residency/show/event/museum/grant has its own unique set of requirements. They are all just different enough that I can't speed up the application process and, in general, cannot reuse the materials. Do colleges charge to review your application? I can't recall. Everyone in the art world sure does. Which leads me to finances. I'm getting my books ready for the accountant and have been working on my profit/loss statements which break down my expenses into categories. Fees are a part of the business. As I gather data points in the next few years, I'm going to be watching the ratio of fees to sales. It is odd that visual artists pay the operating expenses of the venues. Actors do not have to pay to get onto a stage, nor do musicians. Some authors do have to pay to be published, but the visual art market is filled with fees to show your work in public. Everything seems to cost $10 - $25. Modest fees, but they do add up. What if, on average, I have to show a painting in 10 different fee venues for a sale and pay a 20% commission on the sale price? Won't that be interesting? Or maybe this will only be an issue early in my career and these venues will slowly be phased out by other types? Anyhow, overall I am pleased with my sales this year and am looking forward to having a more realistic understanding of the costs and expenses involved in doing what I am doing. Speaking of sales, The Cashier sold and is now in the corporate collection of a publishing company. We are in the process of negotiating the rights for it to be used in a children's literature collection! This was an online sale through Absolute Arts so I am very pleased with my investment to display a portfolio at their site.
My Wetcanvas pal, JCoop, has just finished a portrait of my sister to match the painting he did of me at Christmas time. (He hasn't posted it yet, so the link will take you to another of his recent paintings.) It has been fun working with him again! Joel Cooper's website is in my links page. My father, who commissioned the painting from JCoop, is dismayed to learn that the famous artist, Christo , is proposing to do a project in his neck of the woods, and cover the Arkansas River in fabric. I love how Christo reinterprets the landscape at scale, but I can't convince my father that this is art worth doing and seeing. The whole community is concerned about the project. Wow, I think I'm glad I'm not an installation artist. My audience, thankfully, is not hostile. One last bit of news before I sign off: Prismatic Lens is on display at the Newburyport Art Association. It was accepted into the Winter Juried show. This one seems to be the favorite of many, so if you get a chance, go see it.

Making Faces - Artwork by local artist Lisa Reinke Barrington Public Library January 22 - March 4 Welcome to my Art Blog, fellow Barrington residents! I use the blog as an art journal and online gallery of, well, my art and other art news. Right now, with over 40 paintings completed since November, 2003, I am starting to feel a bit like a soccer mom. I am constantly registering them for events, hauling my paintings to events, attending the event, and picking them up! I get a bit of a breather for the next couple of weeks because all but three of my paintings are on display, mostly at the Barrington Public Library or at the Gallery at 100 Market Street. Two of those three paintings in the studio are still wet to the touch! My walls are bare! Hooray! Here are some quick pictures of the Barrington Library show:
This was my first show that I set up by myself! I had the show laid out and hung in three hours last night. The big lifesaver for me was cutting out tracings of each picture with the nail hole marked ahead of time. This allowed me to tape these templates to the wall, organize them, tap the nail on the spot to make a hole, remove the template, nail in the hanger and hang the picture. I felt like I should be hosting a decorating show on HGTV! Much thanks to Amy Inglis, Barrington's local librarian for so kindly inviting me to show at the library and to the Barrington Chamber of Commerce, who sparked the contact! exhibition focused on things plantable or planted! When I heard about the
upcoming show I was oddly pleased that I actually have a painting with a floral
theme! "Legacy" fits the bill
nicely!
My husband and I dropped off the painting for the jury process on Sunday, then spent a leisurely afternoon in Kennebunkport, Maine watching the snow and the ocean. The surf was incredible! We returned to the gallery to learn that the painting had been juried in. Hooray! Here is the show information: A Prelude to Spring The Irvine Gallery of Art River Tree Center for the Arts 35 Western Avenue (Rt. 9) Kennebunk, Maine January 19 - February 25 Mon - Fri 10-4 Opening Reception Friday, Jan 21, 2005 5-7 pm Lots of flowers, gardens, plants and trees in this one. Then, Rex and I are going to visit the WCA's 6x6 show and settle in with margaritas to watch the states turn red and blue this evening. Later we'll watch the special election day episode of "The Daily Show" and laugh at ourselves a bit. Get out there and vote! Yay, it is voting day! (Much better than firewood stacking day!) "Memory Fades"
"Passing Through"
I spent yesterday volunteering at NAA prepping the show, and I believe the total count on artwork was 270. This is a great opportunity to look for fine artwork to fill that little nook or cranny that needs something special. Most of the artwork is very affordable too, with prices ranging from $40 - $400. The Newburyport Art Association is at 65 Water Street in Newburyport, MA. Also, although I did not submit any artwork, the New Hampshire Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art has a show at the Belknap Mill Society Gallery in Laconia, NH. The show is composed of artwork that measures 6" x 6" with an unbelievable price tag of $66. You will barely feed the artist for a day after commission, materials, handling and entry fees, but you can buy original art as Christmas presents for all your family and friends. The 6 x 6 show runs October 28 - November 29, with an opening reception on Friday, October 29, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. The Belknap Mill is at 25 Beacon Street East in Laconia, NH.
