No. 1 has been completed. It started and ended in Hartford CT as part of a class project at the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music. The result is very encouraging. An audio clip of the outcome can be heard on Myspace where there is a page for this project. Here is the address:

Lief

This conceptual work was conceived by Lief Ellis in the summer of 2003. Since then people have been participating from seven different states as well as interest expressed from other countries such as Poland and Greece.
The idea is based loosely on the Diabelli Variations. Antonio Diabelli (1781-1858) submitted his waltz to fifty-one composers asking them to each submit a variation for publication as a collection. The idea is essentially the same except for one important detail. As the theme gets passed from one person to the next it proceeds to get shorter and shorter until the last composer is left with one measure to contend with. All of the peformer/composer contributions are combined by Lief Ellis to create a profound sonic realization of different communities and styles coexisting.
