The Flight to Florida
Ah, that last romp through the house, trying to remove anything that might be of interest to the ants. Even the Christmas tulips had to go. Our house suffers from ants and the ants feel quite strongly that we are living in their house. They feel we are the oafish, clown-footed servants who's job it is to bring them joy and excitement, mostly in the form of candy canes, fresh water, and raw chicken. And if we leave for a week or more and they are allowed to fend for themselves, they descend in numbers that bring to mind biblical plagues. If we don't do the ant prevention dance before we go, the kitchen floor will look as if someone has dumped out a 1 pound bag of coffee grounds. And this is not a good thing. Chemicals are then required.
We choose Florida because neither of us had seen the Florida Keys or the Everglades. We didn't go further because we couldn't afford it. South Florida was the furthest we could get from family obligations and still remain in the continental US. There were cheap flights to London, Paris, Amsterdam, on British Airways and Air France but it's cold and dark in those places this time of year. And what with all the international flight cancellations over Christmas, it was lucky we didn't go because who knows how long it would have taken us to get back. As it was, half the plane pre-boarded because of all the children and elderly out and about for the holidays. The emergency rows had passengers who pre-boarded.
I took some obligatory out-the-window photos of the clouds at sunset over Houston. Remember that airplane windows are slightly tinted.
