Is worth what you pay for it.

Which is why I felt a little bit uneasy when an occasional correspondent, a Naval Reservist in the everyday employ of a large government agency, recently informed me that he had been selected for promotion out of the enlisted ranks, to be commissioned as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve - and he asked me for advice.
    -
I'll give you straightaway that this was a pleasant surprise, both the joy of his selection, and the honor he paid me in asking me to offer up my pearls of wisdom, such as they are. It has been a very long time since I was an ensign after all, and I am not convinced that I was a very good one, taking the long view down history's telescope. And there is so much to say, one could grow tiresome. Still, I offered him this:
    -
"Always do the right thing, and trust that you know what that is. If you're not sure, ask. Remember where you came from - take care of your people, and they'll take care of you. It's a team sport, so make friends with your peers so that all can pull together. Know what the boss wants, and give it to him before he thinks to ask for it. Go the extra mile. If your boss thinks something is interesting, you ought to be fascinated and the folks who work for you ought to be riveted. Find the man (or woman) who's going to be your replacement, but doesn't know it yet - then make them believe.

Finally: Trust yourself, be proud of what you do and have fun."

And then, almost as an afterthought, I told him to make sure and go to sea, if ever he could. There's nothing on earth to trump operational experience, and we are, after all, the sea service.

But now I'm asking you, gentle readers (some of whom are much closer to the soon-to-be-commissioned butterbar's rank than is your hoary, ancient mariner): What did I leave out?

    Credo

"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." - John Paul Jones

"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Ceasar and Cleopatra"

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friederich Nietzsche
