A Russian bathyscaph has become entangled on the ocean floor at over 630 feet of depth.

NPR reports tell that the 7-man crew has enough oxygen for perhaps another 24 hours or so. The US Navy robotic submersible rescue team (two remotely operated units and 30 personnel) are even now boarding an airlift from NAS North Island here in San Diego for the 18 hour flight to Russia's Pacific coast.

The Russian "Priz" is apparently a manned undersea rescue vehicle itself, while the unmanned Super Scorpios that are en route to the scene (US Navy photo below) are able to cut through 1 inch strands of steel cable, and operate to depths well in excess of 1000 feet. The Priz is thought to be ensnared in derelict fishing nets.

There is a tradition of the sea that goes back as long as men have used it: All will render whatever possible assistance to mariners in need. The Russian government was criticized on all sides when they declined to ask for assistance with the Kursk tragedy. We can only hope that the rescue efforts this time (augmented also by Britain and Japan) arrive in time to make a difference.

This has all the makings of a Hollywood movie - but I prefer the ones with happy endings.

UPDATE: Chap has a great deal more. Obviously.

    Credo

"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." - John Paul Jones

"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Ceasar and Cleopatra"

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friederich Nietzsche
